Astra has become one of the most popular Sentinels in Chicago, past scandals notwithstanding, and is now the team leader of the Young Sentinels. But on their first big solo outing, the new junior Sentinels fall into a new scandal—one which could cost them the team. And Astra has a dream visit from Kitsune, the odd shapeshifter-thief who precipitated the battle between the Sentinels and Villains Inc. the year before. The dream warns of a fresh disaster, in a town Astra has never seen before and that may not actually exist.

Astra’s efforts to find the town from her dream leads to her “recruitment” by the shadowy Department of Superhuman Affairs, and she leaves the team behind in Chicago to learn more about the DSA’s secrets than are good for her, face old enemies, and discover a little town called Littleton. Fortunately for Astra, "leaving the team" does not mean she’s on her own.

Small Town Heroes Wearing the Cape Series Book 4 eBook Marion G Harmon

After being promoted to team leader in Young Sentinels, Hope Corrigan aka Astra is spending her time like a good superhero: training, leading her new team, and rescuing families from floods. Alas, when a team of Hollywood capes decides to mix it up, Astra and her Sentinels are caught up in the brawl and sidelined pending investigation. Never fear, though, as Hope's old friend, the dream-walking shapeshifter Kitsune (from Villains, Inc) decides to Knights of the Old Republic this story up by giving her dreams of a disaster. Being Hope, she naturally follows these dreams, dragging Shelly (both of them!), Ozma, Brian, and all her old friends along the way.

This series continues on a strong keel. I think this entry exceeds Young Sentinels's acheivements a bit, since that book felt a bit too much like setup, though it did have some strong personal climaxes. Small Town Heroes manages to progress Astra both personally and in her "profession" as World's Most Awesome Pint Sized Atlas A-class, proving to everyone once again that though she may fight against it, the world has big things in store for her.

I, for one, can't wait to find out what they are.

Small Town Heroes Wearing the Cape Series Book 4 eBook Marion G Harmon Reviews

Hope Corrigan, better known as the superstrong superheroine Astra, is now leading the Young Sentinels branch of Chicago’s Sentinels superteam. She's assisted by Shell, the techno-ghost of her late best friend, now residing in a robotic exoskeleton as the superhero Galatea, as well as Shelly, her late best friend now returned to life, and a completely separate person from Shell. Jacky, the vampiric (but also alive) superhero Artemis, is also around to lend a hand.

Hope has been having weird dreams — not normal dreams either, as they’re being telepathically sent by a maybe-hero, maybe-villain called Kitsune. The dreams warn of the fiery destruction of a small town in the Midwest that no one can seem to identify. Hope’s attempts to figure out where the town is and what the dreams mean put her in touch with some of the Sentinels’ contacts with the federal government — and that leads to Hope being recruited into the Department of Superhuman Affairs. They’ve got some serious secrets hidden at Guantanamo Bay — namely a little town that can’t possibly exist called Littleton. Can Astra keep a secret hyper-science town from its foretold destruction?

I’m pleased to announce that this one maintains the high quality we’ve come to expect from these books. Excellent characterization, bone-rattling action, realism and superhero fantasy that fit side-by-side without breaking either one.

It’s rare that you get superhero fiction that doesn’t end up turning dark and grim, or just focusing on the supervillains, all for the sake of faux-maturity — but this series sticks to the idea that superheroes are the good guys, it does it unironically, and it makes the entire thing work like a dream.
So much fun! Superhero stories are becoming more commonplace, but one thing you can count on is that an Astra story is going to be a good one.

Since getting her breakthrough, Astra's life has gone off in a wildly unexpected direction. She's an unusual choice for a superhero--survivor of childhood cancer, an older sister who died while very young, a best friend who died trying to get a breakthrough, a church-going Catholic--but these qualities are made to really inform the character and make the reader want to know more about her. She's intelligent and level-headed; her first big romance ended in tragedy, and she has a strong moral compass that keeps her going even when she's not sure what she should be doing. She's had to grow up fast since getting her superpowers.

In this book, we really see how she's maturing. The different path she's taken from her high school BFFs has led to distance and change, which is sometimes distressing. She's taken on leading the Young Sentinels, but the junior team's solo mission to help with flooding ends abruptly and in censure. She like likes a member of her team, but is unwilling to act on the attraction for a few good reasons. And to top it off, her dreams are invaded by a character from previous books, showing destruction of a town she's never seen. In her quest to protect those in the town, she inserts herself into a shadowy federal agency against the strong, informed warnings of Jackie.

At its heart, this book is about change. Astra/Hope comes from a privileged, protected background, which sometimes makes it difficult for her to operate in the occasionally-murky world of superheroes. She's figuring out the leadership thing on the job, doing her best but making mistakes. She's on her own when she gets involved with the feds and has to deal with the military, the town police, as well as a civilian think tank. Not everybody is happy to see her and she has to operate in ways that contradict her training, putting her at an increased risk of harm. She finds old friends and makes new ones. There's a good cross-over with characters from Bite Me.

I enjoyed seeing Astra in a new environment with new challenges. I especially like how, although she may be a superhero, she's still a young woman who is growing up and changing. There's a lot of action and you can feel her nerves as she adapts to new ways of operating in a secretive, politically sensitive environment. Unlike parts of other books in the series, there's not as much personal drama in this story, but that is refreshing as well. The stuff that's there--Annabeth's upcoming wedding, romantic entanglements of her friends, keeping secrets--are important but secondary; just enough for the reader to remember how bittersweet change is when you're becoming a functional adult. I very much enjoyed the reeimagining of US relations with a specific dictatorship. In fact, the redrawing of the map since the Event is one of the more interesting aspects of this entire series.

I highly recommend this book; if you like superhero stories and/or a fan of Drew Hayes' SuperPowered books, you should like this as well.
